It's also not ethical for WooCommerce to charge you thousands of currency for their simple plugins. They are too expensive, it's as simple as that.
All the developers are aware even before starting to develop their Premium themes and plugins that the GPL license allows reselling or give their themes or plugins for Free. So, if the developers are 100% aware of this issue from the beginning, then in my opinion it is 100% ethical if after I Bought a Premium Theme directly from the developer website, I give it away for FREE to other people. Now, you need to ask yourself –> Why the vast majority of developers choose the GPL license for their Themes and Plugins even when they are perfectly aware of this "Redistribution Allowed" issue ?
Answer –> They choose GPL because it allow them to promote the Free versions of their Themes or Plugins in the WordPress repository, and this Free exposure to the Millions of people that visits the WordPress Repo everyday, help these developers to reach a Lot more potential customers than if they Don't choose GPL. And thanks to this Free exposure they get More Sales for their Premium themes and plugins. So, these developers are happy enjoying the advantages of GPL, but at the same time they do Not accept the disadvantages. They try to exercise proprietary-like control over a Free development platform( WordPress).
I agree its not the ethical thing to do. However, in my case. I use GPL plugins etc to see how it works. This gives me the freedom to test things. Once I settle on something. I would prefer to buy from programer and get support also in return.
